The energy flows that ‘balance’ out to produce Climate on Earth consists of two contra operating flows.
The heat input into the system comes from the Sun of course. Maximally applied in a blinking fashion, mostly at the Equator, as seen by any one spot on the surface. A lot of it is reflected, stored, transported around and thence released back to the Universe locally.
The cold input into the system from the rest of the Universe flows mainly in through the Poles though. It is still present in the Sun oriented view of course but in a much more in the background and quasi-chaotic way as described above.
At the Poles cold is king. Sometimes it takes a little while for this flow to be noticed. All that cold of winter stored in ice melting in the arriving warmth. Finally getting to flow towards the equator seeking a balance.
That energy ‘cliff’ of freezing/melting ice stores a lot of energy waiting to flow. It appears many months after the energy loss actually happened. Also a blinking view of sorts, just on much longer timescales.
Which force in this ‘electron’/’hole’ type system wins out short or long term and where the balance is struck and for how long is the puzzle of Climate.
