What is data?

Well, to my mind, the interesting thing about data is, that without the context which is what we require to get information out of the data, then it becomes effectively noise.

The scribe, computer, etc. needs to know that the ‘bit’ in this position on disk, in memory, in the CPU, in the GPU, on the screen ‘means’ something, important or unimportant the machine does not care.

That Context is, as I have said elsewhere, is your decision, not the machines. Try not to confuse the two viewpoints.

from a conversation elsewhere

and also

“All ‘data’ is just bits, marks on a piece of paper, whatever. Without the Context of where to place them it is just pseudo random noise.

The structure you set on the ‘data’ then becomes the mechanism to create the little virtual clockwork engines I talk about.”
